University of Florida Study Finds Açaí Berry Destroys Leukemia Cells
Thursday, August 21, 2008 - 06:59 AM - 9 hours, 52 minutes ago  - Site - Site
In alternative health, açaí is all the rage. While relatively new to the American consciousness, açaí has been around for centuries and has helped many people with its healthful qualities. In order to benefit completely from açaí, however, one must truly understand what it is and what it does. University of Florida Study Finds Açaí Berry Destroys Leukemia Cells Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a new study by the University of Florida showed extracts from acai (ah-SAH'-ee) berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested, said Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with UF's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. Açaí is a distinct purple berry indigenous to the Amazon rainforest. The açaí fruit may be found in some of the large palm trees that grow in the thick forest; these trees can reach as high as 82 feet. Unlike cherries, which grow individually in trees, the açaí berry grows in bunches, more like bananas. On average, each palm tree can yield anywhere from three to eight bunches.

Opioid Pain Relievers Can Make Pain Worse in Some Patients
Thursday, August 21, 2008 - 05:00 AM - 11 hours, 52 minutes ago  - Site - Site
As new evidence becomes available, healthcare providers are becoming increasingly aware that ongoing opioid therapy for chronic pain might actually worsen the pain in some patients – a condition called Opioid-Induced Hyperalgesia or OIH. Opioid Pain Relievers Can Make Pain Worse in Some Patients Opioid medications are essential for helping to relieve all types of serious pain. However, relatively recent evidence suggests that in some patients they can paradoxically worsen the pain. Article Continues After Illustration In some patients, opioid analgesics paradoxically make pain worse.

How Unprecedented Bank Deregulation Helped Ignite Credit Crisis
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 11:01 AM - 1 day, 5 hours ago  - The Magickal Web - If This Be Treason
How Unprecedented Bank Deregulation Helped Ignite Credit CrisisAuthor Barry J. Dyke, in the new book, The Pirates of Manhattan reveals how unprecedented bank deregulation helped ignite the current credit crisis. For thirty years, bank deregulation was rigorously lobbied for by bankers and Wall Street and it rewarded them with Olympian paydays. Yet bank deregulation has brought imploding hedge funds, blatant conflicts of interest, Enron, WorldCom, a dot.com meltdown, mutual fund scandals, regressive bankruptcy laws, over-leverage, over-speculation, legalized usury, millions of foreclosures, plummeting real estate values, a weakened dollar, an auction-rate securities mess and a world-wide credit crisis. Bank deregulation left gaping holes in consumer protection yet no new rules were put in place to insulate consumers from deregulation downsides. Deregulation revealed that banks are not only inept managers of economic risk–but consistently rely on predatory lending for a majority of their profits. Yet banks inevitably get into trouble and continually rely on Congress and the U.S. taxpayer to bail them out. Some bailouts include; the Mexican and Argentine debt crisis, the Savings and Loan collapse, Bear Stearns implosion and the Federal Reserve’s opening of the discount window for investment banks to keep them solvent. Turning Up the Heat on Tomatoes Boosts Absorption of Lycopene
Wednesday, August 20, 2008 - 09:00 AM - 1 day, 7 hours ago  - Site - Site
Scientists have found that lycopene molecules in tomatoes that are combined with fat and subjected to intense heat during processing are restructured in a way that appears to ease their transport into the bloodstream and tissue. Turning Up the Heat on Tomatoes Boosts Absorption of Lycopene Turning up the heat on the red tomato during processing has the potential to give the popular garden staple added disease-fighting power, Ohio State University research suggests.

Researchers here have found a way to convert ethanol and other biofuels into hydrogen very efficiently. A new catalyst makes hydrogen from ethanol with 90 percent yield, at a workable temperature, and using inexpensive ingredients. A Better Way to Make Hydrogen from Biofuels Researchers here have found a way to convert ethanol and other biofuels into hydrogen very efficiently. A new catalyst makes hydrogen from ethanol with 90 percent yield, at a workable temperature, and using inexpensive ingredients. Umit Ozkan, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Ohio State University, said that the new catalyst is much less expensive than others being developed around the world, because it does not contain precious metals, such as platinum or rhodium.
