New Age Bodhisattva
by Christine Hall
In Mahayana Buddhism, and especially in Tantric Buddhism, adherents are often expected to take a “Bodhisattva Vow,” that is, followers are expected to promise that all of their actions of body, speech and mind are to be done for others, not for self. The Mahayana Buddhist seeks enlightenment not merely for his or her own spiritual liberation, but for the liberation of all sentient beings. One is supposed to practice total selflessness, everything a Buddhist does is supposed to be for the benefit of others, not for self.
